Building Challenge 2008

The construction challenge was organised by First Partnership, an organisation aimed at linking industry and education. The challenge, involving seven other schools, was aimed at able year 6 children to raise awareness of the skills needed for careers within the construction industry.

"Reading all the instructions was key to success."

Success in the challenge involved use of problem solving, communication and decision making skills. The task involved the building of a replica building seen, only very briefly, by two members of the team. Communication skills came to the fore as the project manager and site engineer weren’t allowed to draw what they had seen; the pressure to be accurate for the sake of the rest of the team was huge. Newport’s all girl team produced a cost effective building model which didn’t incur any time over run penalties. (A goal not achieved by many in the building industry!).

The Newport team worked very hard with great co-operation between the different roles which included project manager (Jodie), general foreman (Kim), builder (Ayesha), quantity surveyor (Georgia), planner (Rebecca) and site engineer (Louisa). Although the team narrowly lost out to Hawley Primary school, their listening and cooperation skills were highly commended by the judges.

Harvest Time

Thank you and well done to the children and parents for their donations.

Also, a big thank you to 4T for their assembly on Fair Trade.

Once again, the harvest collection is in support of the Hampshire Youth Bureau, based in Aldershot who help and support young people and we are sure they will be delighted with your generosity.

Row, row your boat.

Dapdune Wharf

As part of this half term’s topic “Row, row your boat” Year 6 visited Dapdune Wharf in Guildford. Now managed by the National trust, the wharf was once an important trading link to London. Corn, timber and even gunpowder were loaded onto barges which travelled up to Weybridge and then onward up the River Thames. Coal was the cargo for the return leg of the trip which lasted a total of 3 days.

An exciting day of activities centered on the River Wey.

Year six learnt about the Edward’s family barge business inside the cargo hold of one of the last surviving river barges “The Reliance”.

The importance of pulleys to off load the heavy cargo soon became apparent when trying the hands-on exhibits.

Richard, the River Wey lengthsman, told the children about how the river Wey had undergone restoration. He pointed out the different ways in which the river bank had been modified to prevent flooding and erosion. Year 6 also got to throw in oranges to investigate how fast the river flowed as it passed through the wharf.

Stop watches at the ready!

Year 6 learnt a lot outside the classroom during this visit which will help them with study back in school. A special thank you was made to the National trust volunteers who were expert at answering questions on life at the Wharf and Mr Collings, a parent governor, for accompanying Year 6 on this trip.

Rushmoor in Bloom

On Wednesday 24th June the Rushmoor in Bloom judges came to assess our school. Six pupils from Y6 gardening club proudly showed the judges around our transformed garden.

They discussed the work that they had been doing and looked at the new vegetable and flower growing areas. The pupils were able to dig up their first crop of early potatoes, which had been grown in large pots.

We look forward to the results! Watch this space.

Family Fun Day - Was it fun ?

A resounding YES!

Belle Vue and Newport pupils came together with their parents, grandparents and younger siblings for an afternoon of fun packed activities, ranging from pottery to Bollywood Dance.
Every inch of the school was a hive of activity with happy faces, laughter and a lot of mess - who can resist getting messy!

The funding for the afternoon came from the BIG LOTTERY fund via Hampshire County Council to encourage family learning and from the response so far, parents and children enjoyed learning together.

A big thank you to all parents, grandparents and of course, the children for making the afternoon a great success!
